As a club, we organise a couple of races each year: the Fulford 5 mile road race in February and the Bicton Blister 10 mile and 4.5 mile off-road races in November. In addition, this year, we organised the Woodland Relays: an informal team event on Woodbury Common, which was a huge success. We are always looking for people to help out at these events and marshalling or helping at the start / finish can be a great way to get to know other members of the club.

We are pleased to be offering a free beginner's jogging course to anyone out there who wants to try running! No previous running experience is necessary. Come along for 10 weekly sessions with the aim of a one mile run at the end of it.

Talking about getting to know other members, we are also a very sociable club and organise a number of social events throughout the year. This year we have already enjoyed a 'Coast to Coast' relay and camping event, the evening wedding receptions of two long-standing Harriers' couples, and a night at the Swan Inn, in Lympstone, listening to some superb live music performed by another club member.

In October, we have a weekend trip to Exmoor to look forward to, staying for 2 nights in a bunk house and enjoying some lovely moorland runs each day and some good food and company each night. There is also the annual Christmas dinner and dance, which incorporates the annual awards ceremony, during which certain members are recognised either for their athletic performances and/or their contributions to the club throughout the year. At the awards dinner this year we will have the crowning of the male, female and beginners' club champions.

We recently introduced the new 'club championship' (see the competitive running section) - which is proving to be very popular, with almost 20 members already taking part - as a fun and friendly way of encouraging members to have a go at racing and to try out different types of races. Using age-graded percentages to calculate the positions, it is also a very fair way of enabling all members of the club to have a go and be competitive, regardless of age or gender. The championship is open to any first claim members of the Harriers, so if you join us, you might want to give it a go next year.
